This song describes a relationship that could have already failed, but he continues to feel the need to try and help her as she begins to go down a dark road herself. His help is of no use to her as she doesn't realize how much he cares for her. This ends up hurting him because he can't let go of her. She continues to put him through pain and misery because she won't acknowledge that he cares about her. He must move on with his life but the circumstances bear down on him.
