I think she means, that the certin person can't really ever face their problems head on so they have to run away. They don't accpet help, they don't take blame, and they convince themselves that running away or perhaps even death would be the greatest escape.
And they do it in a way that doesn't allow for help. Like an innerself problem that had boiling over and finally was realeased.

I think the song is basicaly saying how the guy never even tried or put his part in the relationship and she did and she tried and believed in him. She didn't put him down and thought he would come through, but he never he tried and never gave it a chance. So they never got far and he proved her wrong, even though she thought he could do it and was so opptimistic with him.
