Meaning
This song uses lots of clichés about love, and then reinterprets them with literal examples (blinded by love-glaucoma, reaching someone's heart-cancer) which turns out a very clever love song, especially when he whispers at the end, "... on... you...", which makes the lyrics which sounded quite selfish at the start show his wife as the person who has to suffer this.

This was chosen because the idea of Christianity evolved as people were forcibly converted, and they took bits of their religions (e.g. Old Norse, Suomic, Aztec, Greek&Roman) and incorporated them into one big mixture of beliefs. For instance, many of the saints were Celtic and Norse gods and holy days like Christmas and Easter were just renamings of Roman holidays so that they could celebrate at the same time as they did before, but with different spiritual significances. It was also chosen because the Telegraph is typically read by quite well-read people.
