This song is obviously about an older cowboy minding his own business, doing what he always did when he was still in the "game"- riding alone on the range. Some very angry cow ghosts came by being chased by some very angry cowboy ghosts who were deceased, but still very much in the "game." The coyboy ghosts were warning the older cowboy to get out of the "game" while he still has the time or wind up chasing something that was unattainable.
