Well I didn't get a love song out of it at all. At least not a romantic kind of love. What I get from it is that he knows someone who's made many mistakes trying to get what they want and in the process lost their way, but that person has finally realized that and is trying to change and become a better person and he see's that and is try to help out.
But maybe I see the meaning as that because my sister is a recoverying addict trying really hard to change her life and the song reminds me of her.
