I totally agree, she does not love him at all, he just wishes she did and that is why he puts up a front where he can pretend that he denies her, and it makes her rejection so much more palatable when he can blame it on himself. However he's gonna trip with this troubling uncertain thought that he himself may have rejected her -, for all eternity. This thought haunts him so much that his ability to overcome that girl gets so the much harder. Now he idealizes her. She is God and divine and everything good he ever dreamed of. And maybe that is true also.
