I believe this song is talking about the parents who expect their kids to do great things and become their own person, but everytime the opportunity for that comes up the parents tell the child that they can't do that cuz its too dangerous or they don't know what they're doing. It leaves the child wondering how in the hell they are supposed to get experienced for the challenges they will face later in life if they are never given the chance to show the parents that they are ready, willing, and able to do the great things that their parents expect.
