If 6 was 9, to me, even before the Black Lives Revolution of 2020, is clear to me. Jimmy has no choice but to see the world through the lens of the oppressed African American Male. What he is saying to me is that hell would have to freeze over before he would assimilate into the disingenuous (plastic), immoral, white, male dominated fascist (white supremacist) society at the time ... which happens to remains the same. Surely many of his white flower child/hippie friends and fans would have identified with him with their share anti-fascist, anti-war mind-set; however there is no way any of them would have truly understand the profound passion expressed when stating "I will NEVER be you." Because, in the end, most of those same friends and fans would become exactly that same white collar suit. Jimmy knew that.
