*Sigh* this is how I look at it.
Not saying who wrote it but I analyze a lot of songs and this is my interpritation of it.
Some guy dated girl, but never really thought about love, was just in it for the fun and s* or whatever.
But one girl he got with changed his mind, and when they broke up, he feels that he really loved her, even though he broke up with her becuase she thought she loved him. He freaked, breaking up with her.
But no other girl has made him feel this way, he finally realizes now that she is gone, that he loves her. And now he feels like dying without her.
