The song is nothing about god! He clearly conveys an understanding and belief in science. He's not singing about god, but about a woman. The only validation he has that the universe is real is his vision, but this isn't enough. He needs "feeling" to feel alive, E. G. Being "next to her"
Not having another consciousness to relate to makes him feel alone in the universe, but being in love gives life meaning.
