This song is about how the persona feels admiration for a person so perfect in her eyes, referring to him/her as an angel, but slowly realises that the angel has its flaws as well, and all the empty promises he/she made to the persona were all but empty promises - words with no action, a lie.
The angel broke her heart, and emphasizes on how it could have gone on for ever if she had not realised.
