Van at his very best. This song is great because you can simply enjoy the incredibly beautiful singing or you can venture into Van's lyrics, a stange and beautiful journey into a poet's soul. This song is like a mystic incantation, both to start the album "Astral Weeks" and as one to a woman, an attempt to merge his essntial self with Hers(the idea that the woman and the Sacred Feminine are one) in order "to be born again". The songs ends with Van almost dematerializing, "in another time" he says with a laugh, "in another place..."

Van at his very best. This song is off side 2(Side 1 was labeled "in the beginning", Side 2 "the end") of Astral Weeks, a concept album that describes the arc of a near-divine love affair. This song is about a man asking his woman to take him back, but more impportantly, he is asking her to risk for the chance at love. He is there, waiting for her. He starts off slyly asking her, "If someone, not just anyone, wanted to get close to you... for instance, me, baby?". But then he talks about the confusion of love, how his head and heart disagree about her. "I may be wrong, but something deep in my heart tells me I'm right...and I dont think so. I see the writing on the wall" We are drawn even deeper at the end when he is "standing at her doorway, mumbling"- so he cannot talk, but the song is inside him. This is not a song about Love, but one about Being in Love.
