By the time that he composed the ninth symphony, Beethoven was completely deaf. Imagine what an ordeal it was for a man who had devoted his life to music to lose his hearing! To me, Ode to Joy is about one man's struggles and ultimate redemption. I consider the ninth symphony Beethoven's gift to humanity. He created this beautiful piece of music for everyone to enjoy, but he was unable to hear it.
