My husband and I argue about the meaning. We both agree the singer has very deep feelings about Mary and never had the courage to make his feelings known. Because he realized that they were salon and saloon? Is this a funeral? Is Mary dead? And his last chance gone? We've come up with several scenarios, but always with his great love for Mary and his knowledge that it will never be. For us the meaning is at least as much in singer Jim Croce's tone of voice as in the lyrics. The feeling he puts in "Mary, Mary" could break your heart.
