The song was written as a parody of Bob Dylan's paranoid style. They came up with it after an uncomfortable meeting with some record executives. So I think the I and You in the song are the writers, and they have become successful without any help from friends and family, but now everyone wants a piece. I think they were probably nervous they would do something dumb (like fall off a chair) in front of the execs, and they did not feel like they fit in the cafe where the meeting took place. The song was recorded by Stealer's Wheel, not Steve Miller Band. They were surprised when it hit the Billboard charts :).
