I heard John Popper sing this song on VH1. It always sort of haunted me. He sung and played it with such raw emotion, pain and conviction. I have to believe that the meaning of the song is how he broke free from the chains of either the Devil or some type of powerful drug addition like heroin, coke or other. And in doing so, it took all of his energy and strength. And left his best friend behind still mired in the bondage. Now free from his addiction. He is remembering his friend and wondering whatever became of him with the hopes that he, too, has or will escape from this horrific bondage.
