IN MY OPINION the song explains the role in modern society of visionary and tormented people, the "fool martyrs" who lose themselves in trying to understand the world we live in in ways that lead to schizophrenia and exile from society. The contrast between the pure reason/holiness versus the compromise we have to come towards life. Martyrs and saints are no longer seen as exceptional people as they were in the past, and maybe because we (human species) think we know everything about the world, or maybe because this "everything" is completely wrong or corrupted. This doesn't change the fact that our society needs to create martyrs, if not as examples of good, as examples of how not thinking "the good think" leads to failure and Death. He had a lot - of nothing - to say Not all martyrs see divinity Someone above the ground, Someone who seemed to feel the same, Someone prepared to lead the way Get off your f**king cross, we need the f**king space to nail the next fool martyr.
