Although it's been said the song is about a drunken seduction, with the haunting melody which owes much to J.S. Bach's Air on a G string, many people have always found many different meanings in this song. Perhaps there are many subliminal messages. The Miller first tell his tail (or at least the first we know of it), in Chaucer's, Canterbury Tails 1386. There are many other half remembered images, which make up this song into a Surreal work of art that plays on your mind like a Salvador Dali painting.

Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah
Self explanatory really, enjoy your life, and be careful not to waste time on people or things that will stifle you.

Explanation
"
There's a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin' like a toad
The road is life, it's the road we are all traveling on,
the killer is death which is always not far away. The killer is not on the run, but just traveling looking for the next victim.

the Song has no meaning as others have already said. However others are so desperate to put a meaning to the song, that I've read nonsense about Paul being dead, John Pretending that Paul was dead (even though he sang the song with the other BEATLES, on Magical Mystery Tour film), plus that the song is about the Boar War, and the Irish rising 1916, all total rubbish. As Martio posted, the song; "as aimed at the start of lessons in the English Schools Curriculum that had a provision for analyzing the lyrics of songs including Beatles songs. Lennon, realizing this to be a nonsense due to it being a subjective exercise rather than objectively asking the original composer, set about constructing a song that would be impossible to analyse in such a way." However it seems that some people prefer to have a good conspiracy theory, rather than a simple explanation.

Just to remind you there are other way of turning on. The sleeve notes say, and this one is really very clear. Just adding if your unhappy with your situation change it, for as the song says, the message is a song, the misery is gone, by changing your situation, and following your dreams, at least you'll know where they will lead if you never follow your dreams, you'll always be wondering what if, what would have happened, if only, I had the nerve to follow my dreams. So don't leave it too long before you follow your dreams, whatever happens it's never a mistake to leave a bad stifling situation.

Everybody brings their own personal meaning to a song they love, for me the Strawbs, Queen of Dreams, is very personal. The Queen of dreams is inviting us, to explore the world with all it's wonders, and not to be afraid to follow our dreams. In the last verse the Queen of Heads invites storyteller into the mountains, from where she will show him, (but could just as easily be her), the world. The lyrics continue "I had no head for heights, but closed my eyes to make the clime", this spoke/speaks to me saying, face your fears, don’t settle for the unfulfilling boring life, because it's easy. But to face your fears as once the clime has been made, the world is shown and now the fear you’ve faced is shown as just another illusion.
