I have always loved this song, but my relating to it has come very recently. Let's go back a little over 3 years ago. I retired as a mail carrier for the Postal Service in Indiana. At 62, my joints were taking a beating, so I wanted warmer weather and a cause. Helping to save wild horses seemed a calling. I could not afford horses any longer, but wanted something to do make a difference in their lives. I headed to Arizona and enlisted to help a group of volunteers keeping horses free from round-ups. I learned to respect their distance and document behavior, how to talk to the public, mend fences, safely remove horses from highway traffic, how to go to the State Capital and be a voice, take care of ill and abandoned foals, help when a horse is suffering and needs mercy and rejoice when mares I document have a new foal. I learned photography to bring documentation to life. But this past year has been hard. Financially, I went bankrupt and have no savings, I had knee surgery, I need both shoulders replaced (but still getting some use out of them), lost some dear family members back home, car troubles, home repairs that I cannot afford right now. So, I had been pushing myself to throw in the towel, sell my mobile home and move back to family in Indiana. Then, in a funk, this song came on and I listened to every word. This is my mantra now. I can never surrender. I will find my way and if it leads back home when I am ready, fine. But for now, this 65 year old woman is not going anywhere because I will Never Surrender!
