Originally everyone thought it was written for the men in the service but the writer didn't write it for that reason it just became a popular one amongst the military men that couldn't get home for Christmas, The writer couldn't get the song published because they said it was too sad for the season, so while golfing with Bing Crosby he sang the song for him and Bing liked it so much he put it on the other side of the 45 record of White Christmas and it became an instant hit!
