To me this song is about lost love. Or unrequited love. And the gist is that it really is not an end all be all; hence the line "if a leaf has fallen, does the tree lie broken?" of course not. So it is with being in love. Sure that person may not have loved you in return, but it's not the end. Even tho it may feel like the end: "a pawn on the chessboard..."
