This song refers back to the Irish ballad "The Rising of the Moon" about the failed rebellion of 1798. Although the United Irish did not defeat the British army that year, The incredible bravery of the pikesmen against soldiers with guns inspired every rebellion until the Irish were at last successful. Bad moon rising captures the spirit of those fighting against the Vietnam war, which was also futile, and longer term anger against those who exploit us.
