The first verse is extremely similar to the first stanza and final lines of a poem called Piano by D.H. Lawrence, not quite word for word however it is obvious that he has drawn from here. In this poem the poet is listening to a song when he begins to have memories of his mother. She is displayed as a loving and nurturing figure, emphasised by the use of sibilance especially in the first line, as well as creating a personal and homely feeling. The use of third person in "I see a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings. Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings" makes him seem disconnected from the memory as if he doesn't want to remember it or he is trying not to. The oxymoronic "boom of the tingling strings" conveys the complexity of his emotions and memories; strong but gentle; painful but comforting. Towards the end he says "And all of my manhood is cast. / Down in the flood of remembrance, and I weep like a child for the past." which links back to beginning as it is almost as if he has become the child at the beginning whilst remembering his mother. The "flood" creates the image of water, and its destructive power, perhaps how the loss of his mother feels. However water also often represents cleansing and innocence, as well as the ability to heal, suggesting that it is necessary for him to leg go, and allow the dam to break, following the water analogy, in order to heal over time. This demonstrates the hold that a mothering figure can have even when dead or gone. The song then goes on to talk about his father, and on these points I agree with the others, however I felt it might be useful for some to know the origin of these lyrics. It's a beautiful poem if anyone wants to read it.
