This is a classic song about life on the road. He wants to stay, he loves her, but it is "that time of year," the time to go on tour to find his "dreams of glory . . . the ending of [his] story." He wants to hear that she understands that "that time of year" is a season and he will return. Finally, if he had his wish, she'd be by his side, [but life on the road is not condusive to relationships].
