I think that these lyrics mean that you need to be yourself, not what others want you to be. I believe that this is a story about someone who used to be what everyone else wanted them to be. You need to be who you want to be, not what you are 'said' to be by everyone else. Live a righteous life that you have set out for yourself. Hang on to your differences, because they are what makes you!
