I think he's saying that he was trying to grow up too fast. That he found a girl that he wanted so badly to be in love with, and when he felt he was at that point, he thought it was true; he lost something (his virginity, I assume) to this girl, thinking the relationship would last forever, but instead she broke his heart. I think he feels almost regretful of the decision, and that if he knew she would have broke his heart, that he wouldn't have made that decision in the backseat of his car.
