Meaning
The meaning of this song is basically the effects of heroine. Being "down to long in the midnight sea" is obviously a reference to heroine. "Shiny diamonds like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue" is the glossy look someone's eyes get when they're high, and black and blue is the black heroine going into his blue veins. The repetition of "what's becoming of me", getting away and "jumping" or "riding" the tiger, which is a metaphor to the wild ride you get while on the drug, are all feelings one might feel when on the drugs. This song is not an Athiest ballad about "holy diving" into a religion, nor is it a fable about a hero. It is simply about a man's internal struggle with heroine and that he can be better than that.
