I feel the lyrics is about the mixture of religion and gevernment. Because the actual definition for "martyr" is someone who suffers or dies for the beliefs.
The Line "And the reign will kill us all" (yes reign is the correct one)
is translated to
"And the supreme power will kill us all" which is a metaphor for no matter what we do in life we will always be ruled by someone higher than us (the government).
So putting it all together would be saying that the government is interfering with religion and people are suffering for it. Hence "The preservation of the martyr in me" line.
