I believe that during an interview John stated it was a song about his relationship with his father when he was younger. He said he and his father went through a rough patch when his mother died from cancer, and his father re-married. Eventually his father divorced the step-mother and took a step towards healing their relationship. However, just like with any other song, the lyrics are up for you to interpret and fit to your life or help you get through a tough time.
