It doesn't necesarilly have to be a broken relationship. "the best thing about tonight's that we're not fighting" obviously shows that they are together but they tend to get in fights all the time.
He knows that she's the best thing that has ever happened to him, but he's been a s*w up, he was her strong point for so long and now he's falling apart, and where does that leave her? Falling apart along with him. But tonight he's going to fall for her again and try and fix those mistakes and be her strong point because he knows a girl like her is impossible to find.
It's a pretty easy song to interpret when it's happening to you.
