Idols drag you down like an anchor. These lyrics highlight how society's problem is the norm and faith about having a hero or idol, and shows the consequences using the metaphor of drowning. --'security has left you treading water' perhaps points towards an idea that having an idol is a fake security to follow your problems/life by, and now your left in a time of desperation to do it yourself, with no practice or training.
