While Jeff Christie says the motivation for the song was the american civil war the song captures perfectly the feelof the soldier during the Vietnam war.. There is a cynical tone to the song about war in general. For example the statement put down your guns the war is won .The statement so long boy you can take my place expresses the lack of connection to the war.These two statements contradict each other.This expresses perfectly the lack of understanding about the wars goals.
