Dayglow – Can I Call You Tonight? lyrics
[Verse 1]
I feel close
Well maybe I’m not, heaven knows
It’s a spotlight stuck on the ceiling
Why are these the things that I’m feeling?
There’s so much time
For me to speak up, but I keep quiet
I’ll complicate the most of the mantra
The power's out and I can’t turn the fan on

[Chorus]
So can I call you tonight?
I’m trying to make up my mind
Just how I feel
Could you tell me what’s real?
I hear your voice on the phone
Now I’m no longer alone
Just how I feel
Could you tell me what’s real anymore?
Cause I wouldn’t know

[Verse 2]
Voice so low
Sneaking around, so it goes
I always try my best to listen
Picking up things that I can fidget
Circle speed
Pacing around, watching my feet
Batteries drain, I get the memo
“I think that I might have to let you go”

[Chorus]
So can I call you tonight?
I’m trying to make up my mind
Just how I feel
Could you tell me what’s real?
I hear your voice on the phone
Now I’m no longer alone
Just how I feel
Could you tell me what’s real anymore?
Cause I wouldn’t know

[Bridge]
(We're sorry; you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service)
(If you feel you have reached this recording in error please check the number and try your call again)
Don’t go, don’t go so easy
Don’t go, don’t go and leave me
Don’t go, don’t go so easy
Don’t go, don’t go and leave me
Don’t go, don’t go so easy
Don’t go, don’t go and leave me
Don’t go, don’t go so easy
Don’t go, don’t go and leave me

[Chorus]
So can I call you tonight?
I’m trying to make up my mind
Just how I feel
Could you tell me what’s real?
I hear your voice on the phone
Now I’m no longer alone
Just how I feel
Could you tell me what’s real anymore?
Cause I wouldn’t know

i think that this song is about someone who is really unstable and how they are losing connection with the one person they were always able to talk to, whether that be a s/o, or a friend. through the process of the song they start to question everything because they cant talk to the one person they were always able to, and also realizing that that person has problems too. the person is still trying to hang on to that connection to get safety from the advice their "one person", but at the end of the song with the " (We're sorry; you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service)(If you feel you have reached this recording in error please check the number and try your call again)" the person is unable to reach out again and that spurs the "don't go, don't go and leave me"

I think this song is about trying to tell your crush you like them but not being able to tell them. The "there's so much time for me to speak up but I keep quiet" feels like it's about having a bunch of chances to talk to your crush, ask them out, or tell them you like. "I'm trying to make up my mind" it sounds like he's trying to make sure his feelings are real. Like telling your friend you like them but your not sure if you really do. When you really read the lyrics it kind of seems like that he's trying to give you that butterfly nervous feeling that you get when you think about your crush. This song really made me think about my crush.

I’m pretty sure this song is about social anxiety. Sometimes, we might push ourselves to go out to avoid or prove to ourswlves that our social anxiety is just all in our head. However, sometimes when unaddressed, this can often backfire and make us more anxious. Sometimes it can lead to sensory overload, which I believe is what is being explained in the bridge where there is a distant muffled voicemail messenger box being heard (“Sorry, the person you are trying to reach cannot come to the phone..:” before it trails off). Being a sufferer of social anxiety myself, I definitely have experienced these “highs and lows”, where I am pushing myself to go out and then I get out to the event and am having a blast, and then ultimately I get overwhelmed and need to sit down, get some water, and just ground myself for a bit. After this, I typically get REALLY closed up and my battery drains and all I want to do is go home. Idk. So the moral I get from this song is overall social anxiety, I originally thought it was about a breakup but I think it’s more than that, and portrays an individual’s internal struggle with a) social anxiety, and b) the shame that comes from that feeling and the subsequent shame that might come from having to tell your friends it’s time to go home. Which is possibly why the entire song is talking about AVOIDING going out and it makes a scenario in the listener’s head about what would happen IF the singer went out, and then we are back at the beginning of the song where he is talking about trying to make up his mind, and that all of his sensory overload is something that we can agree is a thing that will happen, without it having happened yet (according to the ending, and the sound of the muffled voicemail in the bridge). Idk, that’s just my take.
