Personally, I think that this is a ballad of love from Finn to Princess Bubblegum. In the lyrics "what am I to you? Am I a joke, your knight or your brother?" Is Finn asking Princess Bubblegum what Finn means to her. "A joke", being that Princess Bubblegum doesn't care and that Finn is wasting his time trying to be with her. "Your knight", meaning that Princess Bubblegum likes Finn back and he is her "hero". Finally, "your brother" where Finn is basically being friend-zoned in the sense that Princess Bubblegum thinks of Finn as her brother. These lyrics show the spectrum of interest that Princess Bubblegum has in Finn from "not interested" to "I like you as a friend" to "I love you back". Just my interpretation of the song, might be wrong but who knows.

I think he's talking to everyone in the group. In context, his friends are breaking up "the band" and he's quite devastated. He's evaluating his value in his friends eyes because he noticed their disregard for his feelings on the matter. Therefore, he starts singing, questioning them and pretty much just asking his friends if they care at all. Thus the question "what am I to you". He wants to know what he is to them and if he holds any value in their eyes because, in that moment, they made him feel worthless. As we know, Finn values friendship more than anything, and through their actions, he found this precious commodity under siege. His internal and external reflection is amplified by the statement "you are my best friends in the world". By saying this, he's basically pleading with them, telling them that he cares about them and he would be hurt if they didn't care for him back. He proceeds to individually asks them all what they see him as: "a joke" referring to Marceline, "a knight" referring to Bonnie, and "your brother" referring to Jake. In summary, Finn sings this song to figure out if his friends value him or care for him at all, because he cares deeply for his friends and enjoys their company and compassion. *Shrugs* I need to stop.
