Alec Benjamin – The Boy In The Bubble lyrics
[Verse 1]
It was 6:48, I was walking home
Stepped through the gate, and I'm all alone
I had chicken on the plate, but the food was cold
Then I covered up my face so that no one knows

I didn't want trouble, I'm the boy in the bubble
But then came trouble
When my mom walked into the living room
She said, "Boy, you gotta tell me what they did to you"
I said, "You don't wanna know the things I had to do"
She said, "Son, you gotta tell me why you're black and blue"
I said I didn't want trouble, I'm the boy in the bubble
But then came trouble

[Pre-Chorus]
And my heart was pumping, chest was screaming
Mind was running, air was freezing
Put my hands up, put my hands up
I told this kid I'm ready for a fight

[Chorus]
Punch my face, do it 'cause I like the pain
Every time you curse my name
I know you want the satisfaction, it's not gonna happen
Knock me out, kick me when I'm on the ground
It's only gonna let you down
Come the lightning and the thunder
You're the one who'll suffer, suffer

[Verse
2]
Well I squared him up, left my chest exposed
He threw a quick left hook and it broke my nose
I had thick red blood running down my clothes
And a sick, sick look 'cause I like it though
I said I didn't want trouble, I'm the boy in the bubble
But then came trouble

[Pre-Chorus]
And my heart was pumping, chest was screaming
Mind was running, nose was bleeding
Put my hands up, put my hands up
I told this kid I'm ready for a fight

[Chorus]
Punch my face, do it 'cause I like the pain
Every time you curse my name
I know you want the satisfaction, it's not gonna happen
Knock me out, kick me when I'm on the ground
It's only gonna let you down
Come the lightning and the thunder
You're the one who'll suffer

[Verse 3]
It was 6:48, he was walking home
With the blood on his hand from my broken nose
But like every other day, he was scared to go
Back to his house 'cause his pops was home
Drowning his troubles in whiskey bubbles

Just looking for trouble
Well, there's no excuse for the things he did
But there's a lot at home that he's dealing with
Because his dad's been drunk since he was a kid
And I hope one day that he'll say to him
Put down those bubbles and that belt buckle
In this broken bubble

[Chorus]
Punch my face, do it 'cause I like the pain
Every time you curse my name
I know you want the satisfaction, it's not gonna happen
Knock me out, kick me when I'm on the ground
It's only gonna let you down
Come the lightning and the thunder
You're the one who'll suffer, suffer

This is just a theory of mine, not really any evidence besides the lyrics. Alec Benjamin is great at creating other messages than what you may first hear in his lyrics, making it the kind of music you can listen to over and over and get something new each time. I believe the "bubble" he referenced multiple times was representing his childhood innocence. The beginning of the song was saying that he was in a pretty stable home environment, so he wouldn't have experienced trials like an abusive father before. It was also fairly obvious he hadn't done this kind of thing before as it said his mind was running as he was put in the situation he would be involved in a fight. Fast forward to the last verse, he discovers what kinds of things are happening in the bully's home, and he has lost his innocence on that subject, he has seen what the world really is. In the phrase "Put down those bubbles. And that belt buckle. And this broken bubble," he is saying that the bully's innocence was already gone with the situation in his home. In the music video (if you have not seen it, please watch it. I got most of this idea from what is shown there) the narrator/kid being bullied gives his "bubble" (portrayed as a space helmet in the video) to the bully after he has seen the scene at the bully's house. His innocence has been lifted, and I believe that he is trying to send reassurance to the bully, although innocence cannot really be gained back. I don't really have an explanation for that part yet, but I'm thinking about it.
Sorry this was forever long, but this is exactly why Alec Benjamin is my absolute favorite singer/songwriter. The story he tells is breathtaking when you sit back and think about it. Anyway, that's my guess at the meaning :)

I think Alec is talking about a boy (who may be himself) that has always been sheltered by his mother, and been seen as the innocent kid, earning the name "The Boy In The Bubble". Because of this he's built up frustration and anger inside of him that ultimately results in him, when pushed to far, lashing out and getting into a huge fight with a bully of his. Getting all of the emotions out feels good to him, which is why he acts so sadistic about the situation and says in the song "I had thick red blood running down my clothes, and a sick sick look 'cause I like it though." It also explains the lyrics "Come the lightning and the thunder, your the one who suffers." because, since he 's over here enjoying the fight, the bully IS the one who suffers when protag attacks him. When protag gets home though, he knows the reason he fought, but thinks about the bully's reason. He knows that the bully has an abusive alcoholic father, and realizes that there's stuff he deals with, too. Protag hopes that one day the bully will be able to speak up to his father, and get him to stop. I love how at the end of the verse Alec says "In this broken bubble" referring to the broken innocence of both the boys.
I honestly like that it's a kind of sad song, but yet fun to listen to!~
