Bobby Helms – Fraulein lyrics
Far across deep blue waters, lives an old German's daughter
By the banks of the old river Rhine
Where I loved her and left her, but I can't forget her
I miss my pretty Fraulein.

Frauiein, Fraulein, look up toward the Heaven
Each night when the stars start to shine
By the same stars above you, I swear that I love you
You are my pretty fraulein
.

When my memories wander, away over yonder
To the sweetheart that I left behind
In a moment of glory, a face comes before me
The face of my pretty fraulein.

Fraulein, Fraulein, walk down by the river
Pretend that your hand's holdin' mine
By the same stars above you, I swear that I love you
'cause you are my pretty fraulein.

There is no doubt in my mind that "fraulein" was written by hank Williams. He and Lawton were friends and would sing together just for fun. They actually wrote a song together and are both listed as the writers. Lawton never was in Germany when in the army as was claimed. Hank was there for about a month around 1950 when on a tour. He wrote the song about a year later but it was kept quiet because hank had a man in his group who had ties to Bobbie helms, however, the song was hanks and when he died in January 1952 the song was kept under wraps until it was cooked up that the band member and Lawton Williams would turn it over to Bobbie helms several years later and he had a big hit with it, especially in the great state of Texas where it practically became their state state anthem. They loved it but few knew who actually wrote that great tune. NOW YOU KNOW?

Hi! The lyrics have better continuity if you change the second "by the same stars" line. To.
By the waters before you, you know I adore you.
In the first chorus, its night, and there's stars, and she's staring toward the heavens. In the second chorus, its day, cuz nobody walks by the river at night, too dangerous. In the day, down by the river (side), she'd be staring at the waters, not at the stars above her. ;)
I sang it right (with my lyric corrections) in the vfw's and legion's across america for 30 years. Carry it on, somebody. :)

I was never in germany but always wished I could have been stationed over there. If I had it would probably married a frauline if I could have. I've known as few guys who did and they were happy that they did. I was an M. P. And a lot of our men in the 5 19th battalion at Fort Dixon N. J. In 1967 were sent to Germany but I was not that fortunate, I went to V. N. Not too many prospects over there.

Unfortunately, yes. Very unfortunately. The word isn't used in Germany except in an old-timey sense. It is considered unflattering, as if someone in English were to yell, "Hey, Miss!" Too bad, because it was a wonderful word. You can still say "Maedchen," meaning "girl." But not fraulein, if you want to be polite. Still, Germans love, love the Bobby Helms song as much as Americans do, or more. --David.
