Cosmo Sheldrake – The Moss lyrics
Legend has it that the moss grows on the north side of the trees
Legend has it that when the rain comes down, all the worms come up to breathe
Legend has it that when the sunbeams come, the plants, they eat them with their leaves
Legend has it that the world spins round on an axis of 23 degrees

But have you heard the story of the rabbit in the moon
Or the cow that hopped the planets while straddling a spoon
Or she, who leapt up mountains, while whistling up a tune
And swapped her songs with swallows while riding on a broom

Well, we can all learn things both many and a-few
From that old hunched woman who lived inside a shoe
Or the girl that sang by day and by night she ate tear soup
Or the man who drank too much and he got the brewers' droop

Come listen up all ye fair maids to how the moral goes
Nobody knew and nobody knows
How the pobble was robbed of his twice five toes
Or how the dong came to own a luminous nose
Or how the jumblies went to sea in a sieve that they rowed
And came to shore by the chankly bore where the bong trees grow
Where the jabberwocky's small green tentacles do flow
And the quanglewangle plays in the rain and the snow

But have you heard the story of the rabbit in the moon
Or the cow that hopped the planets while straddling a spoon
Or she, who leapt up mountains, while whistling up a tune
And swapped her songs with swallows while riding on a broom

Well, we can all learn things both many and a-few
From that old hunched woman who lived inside a shoe
Or the girl that sang by day and by night she ate tear soup
Or the man who drank too much and he got the brewers' droop

Okay so looking at they lyrics I think this song is about stories. But specifically it’s sort of saying that “sure, science is great” (I.e the whole “28 degrees” thing) but we can also learn a lot from fairy tales. It’s an appreciation to the power that stories hold. Yes, science is cool. But, you can learn more from stories. Not like more about the universe as a whole or whatever, but morals. I personally think that story telling is very important and powerful.

I've loved this song for as long as I can remember but couldn't recall the name of it and I'm so happy I found it. It just gives me really cool vibes and I am just totally in love with it. I love the story it kinda puts out like it helps me reconnect with my childhood a bit because of the stories it has like the cow jumping over the moon and the intro is to die for its just so so good and i love its point of "Well, we can all learn things both many and a-few" and its an amazing song. It tells us we can learn from stories passed down too more than whats non fiction and proven and i just love that about it.

"the rabbit in the moon" refers to this! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_rabbit ! it's common in many asian traditions to identify in the visible side of the moon the shape of a rabbit, and that pareidolia sparks so many legends! there's even a lunar mission from china called 玉兔 (jade rabbit) !! it also seems to be present in some american cultures!

This song is absolutely amazing! My friend showed it to me and Im absolutely obsessed over it. I recommend it to the people who like fantasy and fairy tales. Anyways, with the lyrics “Or the girl that sang by day and by night she ate tear soup” I see in it a girl who makes her sorrow with cheer in the day and at night cries for none to hear. It’s most likely from a fairytale but welp.

I’m honestly in love with this song. I found it via an animation and links I already had with cosmo’s music. It’s just an amazing song overall and I wish more people know about it. In my own head, I picture the meaning as “culture can sometimes teach us more that science.” The references to fairytales are amazing considering I am interested in that sort of thing. I wish more teachers had an attitude like the one this song has. Honestly, for a song made in 2014, this is amazing. Somebody press the gold buzzer! This man deserves a massive gold medal that says “world’s best musician”
