Dougie MacLean – Caledonia lyrics
I don't know if you can see, the changes that have come over me
In these last few days, I've been afraid that I might drift away
And I've been tellin old stories, singing songs
That made me think about where I came from
And That's the reason why I seem so far away today
.
Chorus
Oh but let me tell you that I love you
And I think about you all the time
Caledonia your callin me and now I'm goin home
But if I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia you, ve been everythin I've ever had.

Well I've been moved, and I've kept on movin
Proved the points that I needed proovin
Lost the friends I needed loosin
Found others on the way
I have kissed the ladies and left them cryin
Stolen dreams yes there's no denying
Travelled hard with contience flyin
Somewhere with the wind
Repeat chorus
Now I'm sitting here, before the fire
The empty room the forest choir
Flames that couldn't get any higher
They've withered now there gone
But I'm steady thinking my way is clear,
And I know what I will do tomorrow
When the hands I've shaken and the kisses flown I will dissapear.
Repeat chorus

I left Scotland at not even 16, on my own, for New Zealand. Dec. 1967. Took me 30 yrs to return to the home village of Neilston. April 1998, I stood shivering, sobbing. Outside my nana's house. I have heard lots of songs, expressing love of the old, the country, the heather, the weather, but none came to mind as I travelled about. Loch Lomond to Loch Ness. Beautiful country. Some time later, in 2006, I was in A bean scene cafe in Ashton Lane in Glasgow, I heard this song. I had this mix of emotions, hearing a wee group singing Caledonia, and here I found Dougie's song come alive to me. The mix of I have moved, and keep on moving, losing and gaining friends along the way. Just so describes A divided heart. I love being abroad, doing, seeing, being, but that little tug for home. Its never far away these days am nearly 64. And I get Dougie's song. (If you see this Dougie, thanks).

This is a love song to the country of Scotland (Caledonia is an ancient name for Scotland). So many Scots immigrate to other parts of the world, but their feelings and sentiment for Scotland never dissipate.
