This song is about a person who is deeply depressed and suicidal over a lover who he/she feels has decided to end the relationship. It depicts his/her hurt feelings and view that the lover must have no soul to turn their back on the relationship, giving the cold-shoulder to all attempts to be contacted by telephone.

In the United Kingdom people drive on the left side of the road. Going off to the right could mean jerking the steering wheel of an automobile into oncoming traffic to right.

Going down to the lake and fearing it could mean that he/she is afraid of going to hell for committing suicide. It could also mean that they are thinking about drowning themselves in a lake, either by driving an automobile off a road into the water or by entering the water themselves and purposefully drowning.

This song has such a highly catchy sound. It has a highly technical baseline, an incredible tenor sax and alto sax demonstrated within it.

To me, it's hard to believe that it truly has such a dark underscore in the lyrics.

Nick Heyward wrote an incredible song and unfortunately the stardom came too fast from all the exposure. He was twenty years old when this song was written and by twenty-one years old the fast rise to stardom status had taken a huge toll on his mental health. He had to withdraw from the band one year after this song thrust the band into the spotlight. A new singer was brought into the band in 1983 and as far as I know they were never very popular after that.
