This song is, for me, about how mary gave birth to jesus, the son of god. I believe it is about if she knew what jesus would become as he grew older. In my opinion, she hadn't really come to grips with it until the day they found him sitting at temple with the teachers, talking about his father's doing.
I would have never been able to do what she did. She had this child, and raised him as her own son, took care of him, taught him. And in the end, he died. He didn't have to, no. Instead, he took it upon himself to bear our sins from past, present, and future. Mary watched her only son be tortured, basically ripped apart, and then nailed to a wooden cross.
The amount of emotional despair alone would've killed me. Losing a child is something no one, not even your worst enemy should ever have to go through and the fact that she did, even though in technicality it was god's son, shows exactly how strong her faith and belief in christ was.
But this song still stands true. I've always wondered if mary knew that her son would be the greatest saviour in the world, if she knew that he would do these awe inspiring things. If she knew and realized exactly the kind of power he had at his disposal, and knew that though power drives some people mad, he still used it only for good. For his father's work.
