This song is about a man who has hurt and been hurt by his, or many women. This woman in particular has inflicted the final blow upon this man's beaten and bloody soul. He's lost and lonely; a broken man now, reduced to a terrified little boy who's only defense and offense are his words. He throws a facade of hatred at her because his love for her is so great that her own simple words have unhinged him in his fragile state.
She didn't mean to hurt him. She just wants him to open up to her, and to his own self. She knows that once he can love himself, his hateful wall will crumble and he can let her in.

No matter how lovingly we were raised, we all carry around some unhealthy baggage from our past, maybe without knowing it. Obviously, this guy's mouth fires off the results of that. As much of a huge fan of sara's as I may be and this song stays in my head for days, these lyrics read as if the woman is about to further damage the guy. But, it also reads like the woman in the song maybe carrying around some baggage she needs to rid herself of.

She's talking about who waste their time hating on someone just for the sake of something to do, not because they actually dislike them "aiming to kill me with words you don't mean"
she's telling them that for once in their life they should try taking a step back and stop being so vicious "give up the machine gun". And in the chorus is singing about almost comical reasons as to why the person might be so mean and hard headed "maybe nobody love you when you were young".
Id say this could be about something romantic or just telling someone to calm down.

I think this is a song telling off trolls and demeaning works or efforts just because they can. Sara calling out haters. And yep, I agree with the chorus being comical reason why that person is being hateful. Machine gun maybe alluding to your mouth or how you use words to inflict pain.
