Seekers – Morningtown Ride lyrics
Train whistle blowin',
Makes a sleepy noise;
Underneath their blankets
Go all the girls and boys.
Rockin', rollin', ridin',
Out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown,
Many miles away.

Driver at the engine,
Fireman rings the bell,
Sandman swings the lantern
To show that all is well.

Rockin', rollin', ridin',
Out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown,
Many miles away.

Maybe it is raining
Where our train will ride;
All the little travellers
Are warm and snug inside.

Rockin', rollin', ridin',
Out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown,
Many miles away.

Somewhere there is sunshine,
Somewhere there is day,
Somewhere there is Morningtown,
Many miles away.

Rockin', rollin', ridin',
Out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown,
Many miles away.

Rockin', rollin', ridin',
Out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown,
Many miles away.

Whenever I stayed over at my cousin's house, her mum would sing us to sleep with this song. At the time I thought it was babyish and embarrassing and that she sounded like an old lady. Now, I am looking up the lyrics to sing it to lull my baby boy to sleep. I sing lots of songs to him, but felt I needed to start doing this one. Funny how things work out, sometimes, isn't it.

I grew up in prince rupert. It rained in sheets, every day, every day, every day. I loved this song, always loved this song the moment I first heard it. I 'knew' living under rain not only does every cloud have a silver lining but that above every cloud there the sun always shines. Then, the leap to creating that within myself no matter what the climate, within or without, there is a light, a ray of hope. A bright shiny day, no matter how dark the night, morning brings the light. No matter how dark the spirit, hold on, hold on 'till morning. You will 'see' things a whole lot differently come morning.

It is a really lovely song. We had an LP record of the greatest hits of The Seekers that dad played every now and then when he was back from his job as a railway driver in the Indian Railways driving long distance goods trains.
Even today after 40+ years I feel like this song connects me to who I am and & to my home in Badnera - a small, semi-rural, railway town in Maharashtra State of India, where I grew up along with 2 brothers and 2 sisters & the best mom and dad.
Looking back, I am amazed at how simple our life was as kids with just a radio to keep us connected to the rest of the world, and a record player that introduced us to the Christmas songs of Jim Reeves and to The Seekers, along with other mostly Country & Western music of the '50s, '60s & '70s.
Would I have given that up for all the toys and electronics that my kids have today and my answer would be simply "never". It was a really beautiful world although very basic and at times tough.

The song makes me cry. The idea of children safely sleeping towards a new day is a charming one that we would wish for all children. I can't recall my parents singing any songs to me but we have always sung to our grandchildren when we see them. It is difficult to sing this one though.

I used to listen to this as a kid because my mum was a big fan of the Seekers. Now I am, as well! But I was a very literal child, and used to think this was about a real train! Now of course I understand it is symbolism. Lovely symbolism, though.

My dad used to sing this to me when I was younger to get me to sleep. I can still remember the lyrics word for word. I occasionally mutter them to myself as I lie in bed some nights. It still soothes me to this day. Such a beautiful lullaby. Makes me cry now, makes me so nostalgic of when I was small and scared and my dad would softly sing it and I'd be sound asleep everytime :)
I plan on singing this to my children someday.

In 1977, a year before her death, Malvina Reynolds told an interviewer that once in a while she had something she wanted to say to children:.

"I remember how it was when I was little. I know youngsters hate to go to bed at night because it seems like, as far as they're concerned, it is the end of the world. Going to sleep means you are going to be cut off from everything, and I wanted to help them understand that they were heading somewhere, when they got into bed, that they were heading for morning.".

WOW....I was doing some research for something completely different about this era. I came across this song and I was amazed to know all the words....(I was born in 62) My parents must have sung this to me as a very young child, it made me feel fabulous just listening, can't describe. I'm going to call my dad right now and talk to him about it. Such a beautiful song...

This beautiful song consists of metaphors. Morningtown is a metaphor for Heaven. When the song begins the train has yet to leave the platform. It is dark and raining. The travelers (children) are warm and snug inside, so we see that the Powers of Heaven are even then protecting them. As the train moves on morning approaches, and then day. Eventually Morningtown is no longer so many miles away but the song ends with our knowing that it will arrive and all really will be well.
