To me, this song is about a couple of kids who fell in love at the wrong time. It could have been magical, maybe even lasted forever but because of the flaws of being young- miscommunications, simple complications- they separated.
There was a big fall out and a lot left unsaid. After a significant span of time, one might have even started falling in love with another (twist of fate). This leaving the other to try and move on but knowing, whenever she is around him, there will always be that most challenging question "what if."
They can both feel the tension, actions are speaking louder than words. At this point, she realizes she can't spend her whole life wondering and this is the moment she put her whole heart, her whole soul on the line. Knowing the possibility of him feeling the same is minimal, she has to do it. This is the final moment where possibly years of suppressed hopes ad dreams will either be diminished with a final goodbye, or lovingly embraced with all eyes towards the future.

Then both parties become in a "I don't care mode" and everything is very distant. The boy has become very hard to speak to, and it's like the only thing they can talk about is like small talk. Firstly, I think there's a slipt lyrics mistake in this. Where it says 'miscommunication leads to follow' should it be 'miscommunication leads to fall out\'.
I think this song's lyrics are pretty self explanatory, she thought they'd be forever and tell the story of how they survived through everything, but they didn't so now she's going to be telling the story of how they fell apart. That's not to saw they're bad, beause they're not, they're amazing. I cried first time I heard this song. This album of Taylor's came out not long after me and my boyfriend, 'Riley' split up and this song summed up that feeling perfectly. So I

This song was written after an awards show at which both Taylor and John Mayer (having broken up some months before) ended up in the same room at an after party and wouldn't speak to each other. Well Taylor wanted to, but being the shy conventional girl she is wouldn't initiate the conversation and mayer being the jerk he is wouldn't accknowledge her existence. So Taylor went home and wrote her feeling in this song. The great thing about Taylor Swift (besides being one of Gods true Angles on earth) is that these hurtful experiences she has are put into songs that everyone can relate to so in essences she is helping so many people.
