Meaning
The Bridge of Sighs was built in the 16th century, in Venice, Italy. A covered bridge, it straddled between the Doge's Palace Court and the Prison/Execution area. Prisoners, upon their sentencing, were immediately transported across the bridge, and either locked up, or summarily executed. At the end of Trower's title track, "Bridge of Sighs", Reg Isadore, the drummer, snaps the snare drum once, hard, followed by a silence filled only with whispering winds. The sound of the gallows trap door falling down, the end of life, and the sigh the earth emits as it witnesses one more life that has crossed the bridge. To the other side.
