When he says "If my heart was a house you'd be home" he is not saying that since his heart is not literally a house, she left him. He's metaphorically speaking that if his heart was a house she would be home, as in she is always present in his heart ("wherever you go"), or if his heart was a compass she would be north, as in the main point, the focal point. I don't think this is sad even though he does say sometimes that he walks slowly when alone and it's cold and everything. I think he has composed an incredibly deep song and it's hard for any of us to analyze. But, basically, she is the main focus of his life and her presence sort of consumes his attention.
