She is not talking about a failed relationship. She is saying that they hurt eachother, but there is no one else. That's the entire essence of the song. From her point of view, he comes home drunk, isn't nice to her or whatever, but deep down, he loves her, he just doesn't know how to express it. It's not a "sad" song, it is in fact a realistic view at adult relationships. When you're in love, you may drag eachother through the dirt. But you're still in love.
