5 Seconds Of Summer – San Francisco lyrics
[Verse 1: (Calum)]
I can still taste you like it was yesterday
Making plans to rule the world, you were more than I deserved
I see you running in the sand, long hair blowing in the wind
Never thought that it would end

[Pre-Chorus: (Calum)]
Leaves fall from the tallest trees
Even mountains crumble into the sea
Holding on to memories
And I can't let go

[Chorus: (Michael/All)]
I wanna get back to where we started to the summer night
You know, you know, you know, you know we got it right
Yeah get back to San Francisco, in the fire light
You know, you know, you know, you know we had it right

[Verse 2: (Luke)]
Remember that weekend when we got out of town?
Drove into infinity, I held you 'til you fell asleep
Without you, the smell of your perfume
Reminds me of when we were free, I swear that it's still haunting me

[Pre-Chorus: (Luke)]
Leaves fall from the tallest trees
Even mountains crumble into the sea
Holding on to memories
And I can't let go

[Chorus: (Michael/All)]
I wanna get back to where we started to the summer night
You know, you know, you know, you know we got it right
Yeah I wanna get back to San Francisco, in the fire light
You know, you know, you know, you know we had it right

[Bridge: (Luke/Michael)]
We don't gotta say anything, don't gotta say anything
Don't say a word at all, don't say a word at all
We don't gotta say anything, don't gotta say anything
Don't say a word at all, don't say a word at all
I wanna get back to where we started to the summer night
You know, you know, you know, you know we got it right

[Chorus: (Michael/All)]
I wanna get back to where we started to the summer night
You know, you know, you know, you know we got it right
Yeah wanna get back to San Francisco, in the fire light
You know, you know, you know, you know we had it right

[Outro: (Luke/Calum)]
We don't gotta say anything, don't gotta say anything
Don't say a word at all, don't say a word at all
We don't gotta say anything, don't gotta say anything
Don't say a word at all, don't say a word at all

I think this song is about starting over with someone that is significant to you. Everything was so pure and was going so well, but recently, that all took a turn. The time that you spent with that person was so valuable and so important to you and you'd do anything to do it over again and go back in time. It all fit like a puzzle before and for some reason, it crumbled down to nothing. You know that if you try over again you can make it work, because, well, this person is for you. The memories are still there and you value everything you had with that person. You cannot just let them go.

This makes me think of a summer romance. Two people happen to meet in San Francisco and fall hopelessly in love with eachother. The summer is easy because they have no things to do other than spend time with eachother, but all good things come to an end, and what they had got left behind. They spent a lot of time together, perhaps they traveled a bit, had a few road trips, but they had to split ways at the end of the summer, and maybe a remaining question that everyone had after listening to this song could be are they going to reunite next summer, or will they never see eachother ever again. The song is reminiscing in good memories, after the summer was over, the song was written, talking about all the great things about them and San Francisco and how they not only fell in love with the city, but with the person as well. And with not being sure if they’ll ever see eachother again, they can only hope San Francisco is waiting for them once they come back.

I think this is about a relationship ending and not wanting to move on. It's about how one second everything was perfect and the next something happened and now they broken up and he can still feel his ex's presence. And the memories still linger. He wants to get back to the start of their relationship when they first fell in love, he wants to get back to their happy place. He's think they had it before they broke up and he doesn't want to let her go. He goes back to memories where he held her though the night and everything was right. He wants to tell this to his ex, he doesn't want his ex to say anything but just listen to him before he let goes and becomes even more lost then he was before.
