Foo Fighters – I Should Have Known lyrics
I should have known,
That it would end this way,
I should have known,
There was no other way,
Didn't hear your warning,
Damn my heart gone deaf.

I should have known,
Look at the shape you're in,
I should have known,
But I dove right in,
One thing is for certain,
As I'm standing here,
I should have known.

Lay your hands in mine,
Heal me one last time,
Though I cannot forgive you yet,
No I cannot forgive you yet,
You leave my heart in debt,

I should have known,
I was inside of you,
I should have known,
There was that side of you,
Came without a warning,
Caught me on a web,

I should have known,
I've been here before,
I should have known,
Don't want it anymore,
One thing is for certain,
I'm still standing here,
I should have known.

Lay your hands in mine,
Feel me one last time,
Though I cannot forgive you yet,
No I cannot forgive you yet,
You leave my heart in debt
No I cannot forgive you yet
No I cannot forgive you yet
You leave my heart in debt
I should have known

Maybe you was right,
Didn't wanna fight,
I should have known,
Couldn't read the signs,
Couldn't see the light,
I should have known,
Though I cannot forgive you yet,
Though I cannot forgive you yet,
You leave my heart in debt,
No I could not forgive you yet,
No I could not forgive you yet,
You leave my heart in debt,
No I cannot forgive you yet,
No I cannot forgive you yet,
You leave us all in debt,
I should have known.

Courtney didn't kill Kurt, but she didn't do much to benefit his life. This song definently has references to Kurt and Nirvana but in the beginning it was about somebody else from his past entirely, after writing and reading through he realised that he referenced Kurt and his life in there an awful lot. Krist Novoselic the bass player from Nirvana, plays bass in I should of known. It's something deep and meaningful to Dave and The Foo Fighters. This song is beautiful, yet heartbreaking. It's an amazing song, well done with the lyrics.

Every time I listen to this song, I am on the verge of tears. The song does have very strong ties to Kurt, and I do believe that Dave wrote it for just that. What brings tears to my eyes is that it sounds like he can't forgive Kurt yet (which may very well be the case), but the 'forgive' is double edged and I feel that Dave is also saying he can't forgive himself yet either for not seeing the signs and that he should have known. This song is full of Dave's pain, and you can hear it. It hurts me that he blames himself. No one should have to deal with that.

Grohl states that he wrote this song about the death of Kurt Cobain, the lines "Came without a warning" are a reference to the shock of his suicide. However, when he thinks about it deeper he realizes that maybe it wasn't such a shock after all and he should have seen it coming, hence the line title, "I should have known". Krist Novoselic plays the bass and the accordian on this recording and a violin is also used. P. S. No, Courtney did not kill Kurt.

The beginning sounds like a relationship that he knew wouldn't work out but that he wanted and thought he could maybe fix. He got in too deep and stayed in longer than he knew was healthy, he had a feeling it might end badly but stayed because he was already in love. He had to be in love because that's the only way you can't forgive someone for hurting you and possibly showing another side of themselves, a good side, until he fell in love, then they showed his true colors. This song has several meanings. The end and the bridge I definitely associatie with his love for kurt and nirvana and how kurt left them all with their hearts shattered. I don't think being in debt has anything to do with money, someone who did what kurt did has the effect of leaving hearts and souls in debt. Bankrupt basically. He wants him back even though he can't bring himself to forgive kurt for hurting him so badly. No matter how hurt he is/was he was able to pick himself back up, and he's still standing over situations that would've broke most people.

There is a definite sense of kurt in this song. Especially the fact that krist novoselic (the bassist from nirvana) was featured in this song. Dave comments on how earlier in his career with the foo fighters he avoided writing lyrics that people could associate with being about kurt, and this song is about kurt and times with all the other people in his life where he should have known.

To me. No I wouldn't forgive anyone either. To feel duped, tricked, deceived, by the person you love the most, by the thing or feeling or song that made everything feel ok or right, or made stars flash before the eyes. Not knowing how delicate and dire things were. Truly seeing no other way or option, so starting over, anew, but perhaps at the cost of losing what meant most. Using a loophole to live on. But here is the song for all too see and in every song in many artists. To be a part of something. What would you have done if you knew? Tried to change it? I don't pretend to know but maybe problems leave a person in a very dark or rough place, and the idea of starting over doesn't sound so bad, especially if you had some sort of tie to a powerful structure. Who's done it, who would know, if you knew would you constantly question yourself? Would you hold it in would you tell or would you maybe sing a song about it. It has to be heading somewhere there is a place to see the truth. How would an ordinary person know this is the question, and I like to smile. I don't think he blames himself because he knows well anyway it goes way deeper than 'Courtney killed Kurt', but the cards are not easy to see.

This reminds me of a relationship I was in a few yrs ago. We started out as friends, & then it became physical. It meant more to me than it did to him. He was dealing with a broken heart from a previous relationship & didn't want to be alone at the time. I let myself fall in love with him, & I still love him to this day. I should have known.
